Jets, top tagging and Machine Learning in the 21st century
Machine Learning techniques have been used at the LHC for a long time. Jet sub-structure has become an especially active field to test new ideas in this direction. I will discuss how jet sub-structure has become an established concept in the last decade and in which sense machine learning is the next logical step in this field. Specifically, top tagging has many applications in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. It allows us to to test different approaches, benchmark new architectures and tools, understand how deep learning tools actually work, and illustrate the conceptual progress we can expect in jet analyses in the coming years.
