Description
ALICE is a general-purpose heavy-ion detector, aimed at studying nuclear matter under the extreme density and temperature conditions that will be attained in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC. The Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) forms the two outermost layers of the ALICE Inner Tracking System (ITS), connecting the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with the inner layers of the ITS. SSD provides tracking and dE/dx capabilities, contributing both to the measurement of the vertex position (discrimination of primary and secondary vertices) and to the ITS standalone identification of low momentum particles. In this talk, the SSD construction as well as the main results from the SSD commissioning with cosmic rays in 2008 will be presented. Performance and calibration strategy will also be discussed.
