Description
2007 will a key year for the LHC. With nearly all magnets now in place, and the job of interconnecting the magnets advancing well, attention is now switching to the in situ testing and the cool down of the first sectors.
Having recalled the basics of the LHC, the status of the installation and hardware commissioning are presented, along with a description of some the problems already encountered and some of those waiting in the wings.
The proposed, rather demanding, schedule that leads to the delivery of first beam is discussed. After the end of cool down and hardware commissioning, the challenges of commissioning with beam are faced and the path forseen to the first high energy collisions is sketched. The potential performance of the LHC during this stage is outlined.
