It took almost fifty years between the theoretical formulation of what became known as the Brout-Englert- Higgs mechanism and the experimental discovery of the higgs boson at the LHC. In this seminar we are going to present the theoretical motivations behind this essential element of our Standard Theory of the fundamental interactions.
