Calibration and performance test of the Very-Front-End electronics for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter

Description
The Very-Front-End (VFE) electronics processing signals from photodetectors of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter have been put through an extensive test programme to guarantee functionality and reliability. Therefore, the system for precise calibration and characterization of all ~16.000 VFE boards was developed and used at IPN Lyon to perform quality control and to deliver required calibration constants which will serve for the initial calibration of the whole calorimeter. In addition, the accurate evaluation and optimization of the read-out electronics performance in real data taking conditions have been performed during tests with particle beams at CERN. The results obtained in the laboratory at IPN Lyon as well as during test beam experiments confirm the high quality of the boards production and show that the calorimeter specifications are reached.
