Description
There are now six binaries detected in high and very high energy gamma rays. All contain a massive star and a compact object. The observed orbitally modulated HE and VHE gamma-ray emission indicate that particles are accelerated to multi-TeV energies within or close to the binary. The particles could be accelerated in the shock where the stellar wind and pulsar wind collide, or in the relativistic jet if the binary is a microquasar. Except in two cases, the available observations in radio, X-rays and gamma-rays do not allow to distinguish between the two scenarios. I will give you an overview of the gamma-ray emitting binaries, latest highlights and the studies of this class of objects that I have been involved in.
