DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Jocelyn Bell Burnell (Oxford University)\n\n \nProf
essor Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a renown astrophysicist worldwide. In 1967\,
she made the outstanding discovery of the existence of pulsars during her
PhD in Astrophysics at Cambridge under the supervision of Antony Hewish.
The discovery of pulsars\, that emit radio waves in the form of pulses at
regular intervals\, opened a crucial new field of research in astrophysics
. In 1974\, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded jointly to Sir Martin R
yle and Antony Hewish "for their pioneering research in radio astrophysics
: Ryle for his observations and inventions\, in particular of the aperture
synthesis technique\, and Hewish for his decisive role in the discovery o
f pulsars". This award created a major scientific controversy since Jocely
n Bell was not nominated.\nProfessor Jocelyn Bell Burnell has made an outs
tanding scientific career. For her unique contributions as a scientist and
leading scientist she has received important prizes such as the "Breakthr
ough Prize in Fundamental Physics" (2018) and the "Grande médaille de l'A
cadémie des sciences" (2018).  She has been President of the "Royal Astr
onomical Society"\, of the "Royal Society of Edinburgh" and member of nume
rous "Sociétés Savantes".\nTIME : The Lecture will take place from 10:30
