DESCRIPTION:NuMass\, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the grant
application\nSo\, you want to apply for an ERC grant? ERC grants are reall
y special: they are awarded to individual researchers\, who are free to mo
ve with them. They provide substantial funding and prestige\, and therefor
e the application process is long\, difficult\, and highly competitive. Bu
t not impossible!\nI was recently awarded an ERC Starting Grant enabling m
y group to develop detection techniques for Project 8\, a next-generation
experiment aiming to directly measure the absolute neutrino mass using the
tritium endpoint method. By developing and scaling Cyclotron Radiation Em
ission Spectroscopy (CRES)—a novel\, non-destructive technique for measu
ring the energy spectrum of decay electrons—we are working toward the se
nsitivity required to probe the neutrino mass at an unprecedented level. F
ollowing the first neutrino mass upper limit extracted using CRES\, our cu
rrent focus is on extending the technique to the large detector volumes ne
eded for the final experiment.\nIn addition to describing my research acti
vity and goals\, I will walk through my personal experience with the ERC S
tarting Grant application—from writing the first sentence of the proposa
l to the last round of interviews.\n\nhttps://indico.in2p3.fr/event/40285/
