Description
We discuss high-pt processes in pp scattering. Cross sections for these can generally be described using "parton model" concepts, that is, in terms of the proton's parton distribution functions and of hard-scattering cross sections for partonic collisions. The latter are amenable to QCD perturbation theory. This has important applications, either for learning about the structure of the nucleon, or for predictions of backgrounds and signals in searches for new particles at hadron colliders. The talk describes some recent advances in the perturbative calculations of partonic scattering cross sections, in particular through so-called soft-gluon resummations. Phenomenological predictions are presented for a variety of cases of interest, ranging from fixed-target pp scattering to RHIC and the LHC.
