Observation of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a 2.5-4.5 solar mass compact object and a Neutron Star

Room: A201 After a general introduction to gravitational waves astronomy, the seminar will discuss the recent results of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA fourth observing run, with focus on the observation, on May 29 2023, of the gravitational wave signal GW230529_181500. This signal is generated from the coalescence of a neutron star with a compact object with mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. From gravitational waves data alone, we are not able to determine if the compact object is a neutron star or a black hole. To conclude, the seminar will report on the present LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing capabilities and the status of the ongoing observation run.
