Description

The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, the long-sought missing
piece that completes the standard model of fundamental constituents
and their interactions, was a triumph for particle physicists.
Although the standard model remains our most complete theory, it fails
to describe several observed phenomena and is widely considered a
low-energy approximation of a more comprehensive model of fundamental
particles and their interactions. The current main thrust of the LHC
physics program is to find the path toward this more comprehensive
model of the universe, and the physics of the Higgs boson plays a
leading role in this endeavor. In this presentation, I will briefly
describe the research that led to the discovery of the Higgs boson,
focus on the overview of the Higgs boson physics program at CMS, and
give the outlook for the next decade and beyond.
