Measurement of the total proton-proton cross section at LHC using elastic events

The ATLAS detector has measured the total proton-proton cross section at LHC using elastic events detected at 240 m from the Interaction Point. The scintillating fiber detectors are located in the LHC beam pipe, at 5 mm from the beam axis. A dedicated LHC optics was needed for this "high beta" configuration. Data taking has recorded about 800k events. In this seminar, I will first present the experimental setup and then discuss in details the analysis method and the background understanding. Finally, the obtained results will be discussed.
